BAD BLOOD FOR NC?

Former Canes Coach Butch Davis, now at North Carolina, apparently bad-mouthed current UM boss Randy Shannon during recruiting season, saying there would likely be a new leader brought in if Miami's program had another losing season.

That did not sit well with Shannon, who now has a chance to beat his old friend when Davis brings his Tar Heels to Miami on Saturday.

Davis will be without his starting QB, who was hurt last week. Davis said he will play two QBs this week, including Mike Paulus, the brother of Duke basketball star Greg Paulus. Mike had a record-setting prep career and could be a dangerous opponent.

Meanwhile, the Canes are reporting that safety Randy Phillips is out at least 6 weeks due to a knee injury. That means he is basically out for the season. But even though Phillips is a senior, he could redshirt this season and be back in 09.

In other injury news, running back Javarris James is out another 3 to 4 weeks with his ankle injury. But the Canes are in fine shape at RB with Graig Cooper.
