CANES COULDN'T "PROVE" VICTORIOUS

The Canes'' 26-3 loss to the fifth-ranked Gators on Saturday night was as expected as Miami's season-opening win over charleston southern. In that sense, the truest test for the Canes is their next game, at Texas A&M.

The Canes beat the Aggies last year at the Orange Bowl. But this year's game is at Texas A&M, and the Aggies will be gunning for revenge.

Looking forward, here are 6 things I liked and disliked about what I have seen of this year's Canes:

1 - New defensive coordinator Bill Young. His defensive plan vs. Tim Tebow was one of the most innovative i have seen from a  Canes defense in years. He sent blitzers from every angle and confused Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and pressured him into premature throws and inaccurate throws and throws that hung up in the air too long.

2 - Sean Spence. The freshman linebacker is a man already. He sacked Tebow, who tried to stiff arm Spence to no avail. Spence also clocked Gators RB Brandon James. Spence needs to start at LB alongside Colin McCarthy and Darryl Sharpton. Senior Glen Cook, who missed 3 should-have-been tackles Saturday, needs to ride the  bench.

3 - Brandon Harris. The freshman cornerback made a great break on a Tebow pass and nearly picked it off. Harris' talent is too great to deny.

4 - Aldarius Johnson. The freshman wide receiver is a brute, holding off a Gators corner on one play and catching the ball anyway.

5 - Travis Benjamin. Another freshman receiver and keeping the trend going of these studs from South Florida. Benjamin, with his long dreadlocks flowing under his helmet, is a dynamic playmaker and it shows already.

6 - The freshman quarterbacks. Robert Marve showed the ability to make plays on the run. He did not make any big mistakes, either. Harris showed guts, too, making a big completion from his own 1-yard line.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE:

1 - The offensive line, the supposed strength of the team, did not open the holes needed to win this game.

2 - Offensive coordinator Patrick Nix needs to create an offense that throws the ball downfield much more than we saw Saturday. He did take a chance and call a pass from his own 1. We need more of that. Marve and Harris have the potential to be big-timers. but they cannot be babied or the Canes will have more 3-point efforts.

3 - RB Javarris James getting hurt. Some are speculating he is out for the year and will redshirt. The Canes have good depth at RB but James is the most experienced move-the-pile RB on the roster.

4 - The refs who overturned that incomplete call and gave the Gators the break they needed to pull away. It was just a 9-3 score in the fourth quarter when that incomplete was called on the field, forcing a 4th and 9 and a likely 50-yard FG try or a punt or a risky connvertion attempt. Instead, the call was reversed - a mistake considering the receiver did not come down with the ball and maintain possession - and the Gators went on to score a TD to break the game open.

5 - Gators administrators. Not having this UM-UF game scheduled every year is a crime. The Gators had a record crowd of over 90,000 in the house - this game simply needs to be played every year just like UM-FSU and UF-FSU.

6 - The Canes' punt game. Matt Bosher shanked his first punt for 13 yards. Later, he had a punt blocked for a safety due to a bust in the blocking. The Canes also gave up some big punt returns. Bosher did make a 50-yard FG and made some tough tackles but the special teams in general lost the battle to UF.

UF-UM series

A series means having six home games in even years for Florida. By not playing Miami each season, the Gators and Gainesville get seven home games and make buckets of money. Besides, will UM split the gate when UF fans fill half of Dolphin Stadium? I don’t think so. Just like everything else, it’s comes down to cash.
