CANES' MOST IMPRESSIVE WIN OF THE YEAR
On the same night that ACC rival Florida State was a exposed as a QB-less offensive mess in a field-goals only 12-3 loss to Wake Forest, the Canes shined.
The 2-1 Canes went on the road and bombed Texas A&M, 41-23, before a crowd of more than 84,000.
The Canes opened the game by allowing a 62-yard TD on a swing pass that featured 4 broken tackles. But after that, the Canes rolled to score 41 of the next 51 points.
And the best part is that the Canes could easily scored about 60 points. Marvey threw an interception on third and goal, costing the team points. And twice the Canes drove to the Aggies' 3 and had to settle for field goals. In other words, there is still room to grow for this offense that was in Aggies territory all game long.
Here is who looked good:
1 - QB Robert Marve completed 16 of 22 for 212 yards and 2 TDs and was picked just once (the first interception of his career). Marve looks like a rising star - very accurate, strong arm, fine leader. He also showed great mobility escaping sacks.
2 - Graig Cooper rushed for a career-high 128 yards and 2 TDs (19 and 51). He averaged 8 yards a carry and had the team's first 2 TDs. I'd like to see the Canes throw to him more, get him in space.
3 - DE Eric Moncur had an interception, the first turnover UM's defense has created this season. Moncur, who had been hurt and was questionable to even play, also had a pair of tackles for losses. Big day for Miami's top defensive lineman and its senior leader..
4 - Freshman WR Thearon Collier had a breakout performance with 4 catches for 62 yards, including a 26-yard TD. He also had a 66-yard swing-pass TD called back due to an illegal-motion penalty. Had that counted, he would have had 5 catches for 128 yards and likely ACC Freshman of the Week honors.
5 - Kayne Farquharson had a nice 29-yard catch and also a 15-yard TD grab. He finished with 5 catches for 67 yards - both team highs.
6 - Backup RB Derrick Thomas had a 34-yard run.
7 - Tight end Dedric Epps had a 36-yard catch.
8 - Freshman Brandon Harris had a 41-yard kick return.
9 - Freshman Travis Benjamin had a 44-yard punt return.
10 - LB Colin McCarthy and DE Steven Wesley forced a fumble that was recovered by LB Glenn Cook for a 2-yard TD run. It was the first score of the year for UM's defense.
It was nice to see so many freshmen again have big games - Marve, Harris, Benjamin and Collier.
Also, native Texans Jason Fox and Tyrone Byrd started at offensive tackle. It was Byrd's first career start. Fox was a team captain for the game. That's good to see because there is a ton of talent in Texas that the Canes want to continue to cherry-pick.
Next up is Saturday's home game (noon start) and North Carolina and former Canes Coach Butch Davis.
Let's hope UM offensive coordinator Patrick Nix - ripped for conservative play-calling in the loss the to the hated gators - has his unit ready to play the Tar Heels just like they were prepared Saturday vs. the Aggies.
