EX-CANES STAR JAMES JONES RETURNS HOME
Here's what's up with the Canes' three major sports:
BASKETBALL - Former Canes forward James Jones, 27, returned home to sign a five-year contract with the Miami Heat. It's a smart move by the Heat because the 6-8 Jones is one of the best shooters in the NBA. And it's great for Jones - who still owns a home in Miami Lakes - to come back to the 305.
FOOTBALL - The career of quarterback Kyle Wright continues to go downhill. The former prep phenom and college disappointment went undrafted and has now been cut by the Minnesota Vikings before even making it to training camp.
BASEBALL - The Canes still need to hire an assistant coach to replace Gino DiMare's spot on the staff, and that will be key. Cross--town rival FIU just hired Delmonico, who won 699 games as a head coach at Tennessee, so that's a great get for them.
Meanwhile the Canes also need to find some winning answers on the field, where the pros have ravaged their lineup. Outfielder Adan Severino was thought to be the only draftee who might return to UM because he was picked fairly late - 26th round. But even he has signed, meaning Miami will have the following hitters to build around next season:
C/DH - Yaz Grandal
DH/C - Jason Hagerty
1B - Joey T
2B - open
SS - Ryan Jackson
3B - open
RF - open
CF - open
LF - Dave DiNatale
P - Chris Hernandez
closer - Kyle Bellamy
In other words, there are a lot of holes to fill.
