CANES LACKING DEPTH AT DE
It's prime time for the Canes baseball team, but there is unfortunate injury news to deal with in football.
Defensive end has become a trouble spot with first Allen Bailey and now Courtney Harris going down with injuries. Bailey tore a pectoral muscle and is questionable for the first couple of games. Harris tore his Achilles' tendon and may miss the entire year.
Eric Moncur remains one starter, and is the top d-lineman on the team. Hopefully, Bailey, who is a stud, can rehab quickly and make it back for the start of the season.
If not, redshirt freshman Adewale Ojomo is a terrific prospect and could move right in as the starter. Depth, though, will be an issue.
My solution - and I doubt if the Canes would do this - is to go to a lot of 3-4 looks. The Canes have an abundance of young, fast linebackers and a brilliant new defensive coordinator. The 3-4 would keep offenses guessing as to who is coming on a blitz and who is dropping into coverage. And Bill Young is the type of coach who can pull that off.
However, the Canes have always been a 4-3 team, and it is unlikely head coach Randy Shannon - a former UM linebacker - will change so dramatically.
