THE OTHER CANES SHOE DROPS
Two days after the Canes were eliminated from the College World Series - finishing 5th in the nation - it was announced that hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Gino DiMare was stepping down.
The press release said that DiMare left the program to spend more time with his wife and their two young daughters. I don't know if there is anything more to it than that. We will know it's true if he doesn't soon return to coaching elsewhere. If he does take another coaching job and returns to the same old grind then maybe he had some rift at Miami.
But let's take him for his word and assume it's not some fishy deal like Van Gundy quitting the Miami Heat to spend more time with his family only to return to coaching with Orlando shortly thereafter.
What we know for sure is that the Canes will greatly miss DiMare, a former standout outfielder with The U and an assistant coach for 12 years. The biggest void now is the job of recruiting coordinator. Head coach Jim Morris will have to find someone stellar to fill that role.
But give Morris credit. He lost recruiting gury Turtle Thomas a few years ago and many predicted doom and gloom for the Canes. Instead, he promoted DiMare and the program kept right on humming. In 15 years under Morris, the Canes have won 2 national titles and have been to the CWS a total of 11 times.
