TIME FOR SENIOR TO STEP UP
Senior Kiki Garcia gets the start tonight at 7 in an elimination game vs. Stanford. If the Canes win, they will play Georgia on Friday and Saturday - having to win both games to get to the best-of-three CWS championship series.
The Canes hope to throw David Gutierrez on Friday - assuming he has recovered from the line drive that hit him on his throwing shoulder in Monday's game vs. Florida State.
Saturday's starter would be Canes ace and National Freshman of the Year Chris Hernandez.
Meanwhile, David's brother Carlos - the Canes' closer and a first-round pick earlier this month - has been the focus of intense scrutiny because of his poor efforts in Omaha the past week. He lost a 4-3 lead in the first game, making a crucial throwing error and allowing 3 runs, taking the loss. He then struggled big-time to hold on to a 7-2 lead in the 9th vs. FSU.
Carlos' best pitch is a power sinker which induces numerous ground-ball outs. But batters at the CWS are laying off that pitch and Carlos is falling behind batters. He is giving up walks and also hits when he is behind in the count and forced to lay the ball in there. The only pitch he has had success with in Omaha has been a backdoor curve that comes in at 81 mph and surprises batters.
As a result of his two poor performances, Carlos' confidence has also very obviously been shaken. He needs to make his adjustments quick and bounce back or the Canes will be gone soon.
By the way, the fact that FSU Coach Mike Martin did not shake hands with UM's Jim Morris after Monday's game was also in the media the past few days, including ESPN, which made a big deal about the issue.
Here's my take: If Martin doesn't want to come out of the dugout, it only hurts him because it makes him look bush league. He already has the unfortunate record of having taken so many teams to CWS and never having won a championship. Now he is looked at for having poor sportsmanship.
Not good for him.
Apparently, Martin's beef with Morris and Miami is that he heard them calling out FSU's pitches in a game in 2004. Here is my free advice to Martin: Change your signs. It is not hard to do. Use a key in which only after the catcher flashes that key is the following sign "live."
If you do that, no one can steal your signs. And if a team can figure out what you are doing and be right and yell it in time for the batter to react, hey, that just means that they are smarter than you.
