CANES BASEBALL: ERICKSON READY, TEKOTTE HONORED
There is a lot going on with the Canes' baseball team, ranked No. 1 in the nation. Here is the 411:
- The Canes, who had its 14-game win streak snapped last week by area rival Florida Atlantic, recovered to sweep a three-game series at 10th-ranked Georgia Tech. By virtue of that impressive sweep, the Canes (30-3 overall, 15-1 ACC) remained atop Baseball America's national poll.
- The Canes will play at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday night, giving them a chance to avenge last week's loss. The season series is tied, 1-1, so far.
- This weekend, the Canes will visit Florida State, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and No. 2 by Baseball America.
- Canes centerfielder Blake Tekotte was named the ACC's Player of the Week. He led the Canes to a 4-1 week, hitting .417. He was locked in during a doubleheader sweep over Georgia Tech, hitting safely in 7 out of 10 at-bats, including 3 homers and 8 RBI. It was the junior's first Player of the Week honor.
- Canes ace starting pitcher Eric Erickson, who has missed one month due to a sore arm, should return this Sunday against FSU. He is expected to pitch just three innings, though, as the Canes will be conservative with his recovery.
- Mike Rudman (0-0, 6.10) will start against FAU, and judging by his oversized ERA, the Canes will have to hit big to win the rubber game of the series. The Canes should be in goode shape with Chris Hernandez (5-0, 2.77) starting the FSU opener. In game 2, Enrique Garcia (2-0, 5.56) doesn't have great numbers, but he has pitched well lately. Erickson will start the third game, but the bullpen will have to be ready early.
