CANES ADD A POINT GUARD
Wednesday is the first day of the late-signing period for men's basketball, and the Canes are expected to officially announce the transfer of former Villanova backup point guard Malcolm Grant, a 6-0, 170-pounder.
Grant, who is from Brooklyn, N.Y., first committed to Seton Hall before signing with Villanova. And after averaging 5.6 points as a freshman sy
Nova, he has decided to transfer to Miami, where he will be eligible for the 2009-2010 season.
Grant, who has great speed, could replace Lance Hurdle as the starting point guard in 2009-2010. Hurdle, also speedy, will be a senior this coming season.
Grant is more of an explosive scorer than a set-you-up point guard, but I think the Canes will benefit from his aggressive New Yorker game.
The only problem is that the Canes used up their final scholarship without addressing their dire need for a solid backup point guard for this coming season.
Grant, though, has already proven he can score in big-time college ball and could be a good pickup once he is eligible. He scored 18 points in 8 minutes vs. LSU last December. He also scored 22 points in a win over No. 13 Pitt.
Perhaps his most impressive stat is the fact that he led Villanova with a 47-percent accuracy rate on three-pointers.
Grant also played a year of prep school, which means he will be just a sophomore eligibility-wise when he is ready to play for UM, but he will be a senior age-wise. He could do well here.
Still wanted another PG this year, though!
