IS JACK ATTACK READY FOR TEXAS?
I still can't get over Jack McClinton's second-half performance on Friday. He scored a career-high 38 points in the win over St. Mary's, but his 32 second-half points matched the entire Gaels' output for those final 20 minutes.
Incredible when one man can match an entire team point for point for 20 minutes - in an NCAA Tournament game no less.
Even more impressive is the fact that Jack was coming off the flu two days earlier and had also slumped in the ACC Tournament and was scoreless for the first 17 minutes vs. the Gaels.
Incredible.
But now come the second-seeded Texas Longhorns (29-6), who have beaten several national powers this season, including Tennessee, UCLA, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kansas State.
Texas lost to Michigan State, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Kansas.
The Longhorns strength is in their three-man backcourt, especially point guard D.J. Augustin, who led the team in points (19.4) and assists (5.7).
Shooting guard D.J. Abrams, who is 5-11 just like Augustin, actually made more three-pointers this year than McClinton. Abrams averages 3.4 three-pointers and 15.4 points per game.
The third starting guard is 6-2 Justin Mason, who averages 7.1 points per game.
The big man up front is 6-7, 230-pound Damion Jones (13.1 points, 10.5 rebounds). And the center is 6-9, 225-pound Connor Atchley (9.5, 5.3).
The Horns are not particularly deep. Their best bench player is probably 6-6 freshman forward Gary Johnson, an energy guy inside who started four games and provided season averages of 6 points and 4 boards.
The Canes' biggest concern will be guarding the three-point line. All five starters can shoot threes, including the two big post players.
To win, the Canes will have to get the ball inside to Jimmy Graham, Dwayne Collins, Anthony King and Ray Hicks. If those guys can score effectively inside and draw fouls, it will force the Horns to go to their suspect bench and also open up the perimeter for McClinton, James Dews, Lance Hurdle and Brian Asbury.
