CANES LOSE ADRIAN THOMAS
Adrian Thomas, a 6-7 small forward from Flanagan High in Broward County, has had lousy luck the past two years, especially with the number 4.
Last year, he played just four games before being lost for the rest of the season due to an abdominal injury.
On Friday, the Canes' men's basketball program announced that Thomas was lost for the season again, this time due to a left knee injury suffered in practice. Ironically, Thomas played four games both years before getting hurt.
A reserve, Thomas was averaging 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.3 minutes this season. He is considered a good defensive player.
Because of Thomas' injury, starter Brian Asbury may have to play more minutes. The Canes can also use Dwayne Collins and Ray Hicks as backups.
Meanwhile, the men's hoops program officially announced the signings of two recruits for the 2008-2009 season - DeQuan Jones and Reginald Johnson.
Jones, of Marietta, Ga., is a 6-6 athlete that ESPN ranks 8th in the nation among small forwards. He had modest numbers as a junior - 10.6 points and 4 rebounds - but Canes Coach Frank Haith predicts he will have an immediate impact at UM.
Johnson, of Winston Salem, N.C., is not as highly ranked, even though his numbers are more impressive. Ranked 38th among centers by Scout.com, he averaged 22.7 points, 16.0 rebounds and 6.0 blocks.
"Reginald also has a tremendous upside," said Haith. "At 6-9, 285, he brings size to our squad and has a 7-2 wingspan. For a big kid, he has great hands, good agility and good foot speed."
